Abortion: A Serious Challenge between Morality and Women’s right
Having an abortion is a common phenomenon which can be seen around the world. Women may decide to quit her pregnancy because of various reasons. Taking an example from our society, September is called as a month of abortion in Taiwan. Abortion is also a controversial issue when it comes to the election of president in America last year. There is a report of BBC radio website indicates that one in four UK women have had a termination and the number is on the rise. Therefore, the problem that how to make the choice between morality and women’s right comes to my mind. Personally, I approve that women have the right to perform the operation of abortion. No woman would make such decision casually, and we should respect women’s right of terminating or proceeding with the pregnancy.
Women should have the right of abortion because it is undeniable that women are the one who endure the torture during the pregnancy and the result of having abortion. My standpoints have in common with Obama, the President-elect in America, who thinks that abortion is about women’s right. According to the videos I found out from Youtube, Obama claimed that the law of limiting abortion would influence, even harm women’s rights. In another report of Yahoo news online, it mentioned that an Australian state, Victoria, is going to pass a bill which give women the sole choice of whether to have abortion or not. Currently, woman there can abort only when the doctor thinks pregnancy would harm the health of the mother. The bill progresses despite opposition. The information reflects the attitude of the administration toward the issue. Abortion becomes an issue which trigger the debate by governments, the perspective toward abortion even influence the relationship between people and governments.
Looking from the other points of view, the anti-abortion groups put emphasis on the human rights of the unborn babies. Pro-life activists hold a perspective that abortion is equal to murder. Pro-life refers to disagreement to abortion and support for fetus’ right. Fetus has the right to live, and should be treated as an independent human being even when they are still in mother’s womb. Through the opposite standpoints above, we can understand that the issue is really a dilemma for governments to deal with. The reason for them to be against to abortion is mainly by morality. However, do women have no rights to abort if she does not want to have a child? Does a woman who gets pregnant unexpectedly have to abort her baby covertly in illegal clinic?
To solve the problems, we should know the reason why women choose to have abortions at first. A news documentary on BBC radio website investigated the women who had chosen to have an abortion. One of the women who was interviewed said that “I don't regret what I did and I still don't regret not telling my parents as I know they would have taken control, 16 is too young to have a baby, you are still so young yourself, go out and enjoy yourself before settling down, I now have 2 children and have the maturity to enjoy them.” Besides, in a news report of BBC website discussed about the reasons for abortion. Women may decide to have abortion for social reasons such as poverty. The family can not afford to raise a child, or the mother is too young to keep a child. In addition, the child is the result of crimes such as rape and incest, the mother’s health problems which includes mental health, the serious physical handicaps of the children, the birth control policy of the government, and the parents’ gender selection. These are the general factors for women to choose abortions.
After understanding the reasons and motivations for a woman to have abortion, we can find out that it is really complicated for a woman to abort her child. We can not just define abortion as murder, because we do not know what difficulties the woman exactly goes through. If those pro-life activists consider about the unique situation of each woman, they would not put abortion in such way. To have abortions is never a simple choice for women. It is not just a question to give birth to the child or not. What women should face is the responsibility. Once you choose to give birth to the child, you are responsible to raise and educate him or her. A large amount of time and money are needed, the parents’ mental condition should be ready for have a child, too. If the woman’s economic situation does not allow her to keep her child, what can she do after her child come to the world? Abandon her baby or send her baby to an orphanage? There must be some obstacles for a mother to make the decision of aborting her baby. If the government restricts women’s abortion rights, it may result in the damage of women’s health, illegal abortion and abandoned babies would become an even larger problem to the society.
Misunderstanding often happens when people forget to think for each other. In a magazine named The Crisis has a report “March for women’s lives” which introduces the march about women who strives for their abortion rights. Women are struggling to get their rights of choosing whether they should abort or not by themselves. Actually, women are the protagonists of the problem, and they should have the dominance to make the decision.
In contrast to pro-life, pro-choice refers to a view that whether a woman wants to have an abortion or not, the fertility rights should be given without restriction. Pro- choice advocates insist on that a woman should have the complete control over the choice to terminate or continue the pregnancy. They emphasize on the point that having a child is a personal choice which would affect woman’s body and health. It would be better if the government allows women to have abortions. They put abortion as a kind of “individual liberty”, and every woman should have “reproductive rights” as well. Furthermore, pro-choice supporters also consider abortion as an issue of bodily autonomy. Since the embryo is a part of a woman’s body, the woman should have the right to control over it. It is necessary to respect individual woman’s choices.
To discuss about the part of the abortion right, here is a research about abortion law in different countries. According to the research paper “Developments in Laws on Induced Abortion: 1998-2007” in the journal of International Family Planning Perspectives, we can know the main trend of the legislation about abortion in different countries during 1998 to 2007. The research divides the countries into five categories according to their abortion laws. In the first category are countries whose laws permit abortion to save woman’s life. Nearly 26% of the world’s people live in the 68 countries in this category. The second category includes countries whose laws permit abortion to protect a woman’s physical health. Almost 10% of the world’s people live in the 35 countries in the category. Countries in the third category have laws that explicitly recognize threats to mental health as justification for abortion. Twenty-three countries, 4% of the world’s population have such laws. Countries in the fourth category take woman’s social and economic circumstances into account. Fourteen countries, about 20% of the world’s proportion are in the category. The last category contains countries that permit abortion without restriction. Fifty-six countries, representing almost 40% of the world’s people, have laws in this category. During the last ten years, sixteen countries have increased the number of grounds on which abortions may be legally performed. Even the countries have prohibited abortion by its laws allow a part of abortion when pregnancy would hurt the mother's health. Only two countries added restriction to their abortion laws.
It is obvious that liberalization of abortion laws is the main trend during the last ten years around the world. More countries have broadened the grounds of legal abortion. Banning abortion under all the conditions is impossible. Permitting abortion increases women's human rights, because a woman can be the master of her own body. Women would not be forced to accept the children who are not expected. Women are in the first place of this issue of abortion. To restrict abortions not only harm women’s human rights, but also make the secret and dangerous abortions increase. By the normal access to abortions can help women stay in a safer medical treatment. If the government liberalizes the laws and makes the aborted procedures more accessible, it can reduce women's maternal mortality or morbidity, the number of deaths and the after effects. Women do not have to worry about the danger of accepting a secret procedure. If a woman considers to aborting her child, the government should provide her enough information and the result of abortion, instead of limiting women’s rights to abortion. When a woman understand what abortion is, how the procedure be performed, and think about why she choose to abort her baby, she would make the most appropriate decision by herself.
It can be questioned that are those who opposed to abortion really caring about women’s circumstances? Have they ever stood in women’s position? In an article “The Female Nature: A Woman's Destiny?” in the Journal of Humanist takes partial-birth abortion for example. The Congress of United States prohibits partial-birth because they think that the procedure is inhumane. There is a Justice wrote about why abortion should be banned. “Whether to have an abortion requires a difficult and painful moral decision … it seems unexceptional to conclude some women come to regret their choice to about the infant life they once created and sustained.” They supposed that a woman would and should regret for having an abortion. Abortion violates a woman’s motherhood. Therefore, the government should prohibit abortion. Nevertheless, abortion is not an issue which concerns about a woman’s motherhood, but the individual liberty and bodily autonomy. When a woman decides to have an abortion, it does not mean she is a cruel person. It just indicates the woman faces some troubles so that she has to terminate her pregnancy. The other article “Abortion: we need compassion, not dogma” in the Journal of New Statesman mentions about the “pro-life” campaigners. Their aim is to stop abortion completely. Even when the limit time of abortion is cut from 24 to 20 weeks, their concern is not to save the babies who are terminated between 20 and 24 weeks, but to use a lower limit as a stepping stone to an outright ban. Most of them are motivated by religious or philosophical purpose. We can see that women’s thoughts are usually to be neglected. The government, humanists, and the clergies intend to limit women’s right to have abortions. Regardless of each woman’s unique situation, what a woman need is usually ignored. Why can they force woman to accept their arbitrary decision? When it comes to a woman’s set of circumstances, we should respect the necessity of women to make such choice in the first place. There is no denying that women are the roles who involve in the issue. Do those who oppose abortion really know what situation a woman goes through? Or they just limit women’s rights by the slogan of humanism?
Morality, dogma, and humanism is the main standpoints for those who oppose to abortion. The pro-life supporters care about the unborn baby more than the expectant mother. Nevertheless, the role mother plays is actually the most important one. The mother has to face all the problems when she decides to give birth to her baby. What women need is compassion, instead of the dogma and condemnation. Anti-abortion groups condemn women’s behavior of aborting the babies, but such condemnation is meaningless if they can not provide any way to solve the complicated condition of each woman and the problems each woman face.
In conclusion, the reasons for abortion are diverse when it comes to each woman’s particular circumstance. Nowadays, liberalizing abortion laws has become the tendency in the world. The government should make the information about abortion and the aborted procedures become more accessible. Respect for individual women is significant. Women can and must be trusted to make fundamental personal decisions in a free society. Every woman has the right to control her own body and to determine when or whether to bear a child.

Abortion: A Serious Challenge between Morality and Women’s right [draft]
Having an abortion is a common phenomenon which can be seen around the world. Taking an example from our society, September is called as a month of abortion in Taiwan. It is also a controversial issue when it comes to the election of president in America last year. There is also a report of BBC radio website indicates that one in four UK women have had a termination and the number is on the rise. Thus, the problem that how to make the choice between morality and women’s right comes to my mind. Personally, I approve that women have the right to perform the operation of abortion. No woman would make such decision casually, and we should respect women’s right of terminating or proceeding with the pregnancy.
From the other points of view, the anti-abortion groups insist on the human rights of the unborn babies. They hold a perspective that abortion is equal to murder the babies. The children should be treated as independent humans even they are still in the womb. From the opposite standpoints above, we can understand that the issue is really a dilemma for governments to deal with. The reason for them to be against to abortion is mainly by morality. However, do women have no rights to abort if she does not want to have a child? Does woman who get pregnant unexpectedly have to abort her baby covertly in illegal clinic?
To solve the problems, we should know the reason why women choose to have abortion at first. A news documentary on BBC radio website investigated the women who had chosen to have abortion. Tracey said that “I don't regret what I did and I still don't regret not telling my parents as I know they would have taken control, 16 is too young to have a baby, you are still so young yourself, go out and enjoy yourself before settling down, I now have 2 children and have the maturity to enjoy them.” In a news report of BBC website discussed about the reasons for abortion. Women may decide to have abortion for social reasons such as poverty. The mother is unable to cope with a child, and the mother is too young to have a child. The child is the result of crimes such as rape, incest, and child abuse. Under the situation, it is quite hard for a woman to keep the pregnancy. In addition, mother’s health including mental health, the serious physical handicaps of the children, the birth control policy of the government, and the parents’ gender selection and so forth. These are the general factors for woman to choose abortion.
After understanding the reasons and motivations for a woman to have abortion, we found out that it is really complicated for a woman to abort her child. We can not just define abortion as murder the babies, because we do not know what difficulties the woman exactly goes through. If those anti-abortion groups consider about the unique situation of each woman, maybe they would change their ideas. To have an abortion is never a simple choice for women. It is not just a question to give birth to the child or not. What women should face is the responsibility. Once you choose to give birth to the child, you are responsible to keep him or her and educate him or her. A large amount of time and money are needed, the parents should be prepared of their mental condition, too. If the woman’s economic situation does not allow her to keep her child, what can she do after her child come to the world? Abandon her baby or send her baby to an orphanage?
I believe that there must be many difficulties for a mother to make the decision of aborting her baby. If the government restricts women’s abortion rights, it may damage women’s health and become a greater problem to the society. Misunderstanding often happens when people forget to think for others. In the online resources of a magazine named Crisis has a report which introduces the march about women who strives for their abortion rights. Women are struggling to get their right of choosing whether they should abort or not through themselves. Actually, women are the protagonist of the problem, and they should have the dominance to make the decision. If people could stand by women’s side and try to respect every woman’s unique situation, maybe the problem would not trigger such a great dispute.
In my opinion, abortion is women’s basic right. To discuss about the part of human right, let’s take a look of the investigation first. According to a research paper “Developments in Laws on Induced Abortion: 1998-2007” of Journal of International Family Planning Perspectives, we can know the main trend of the legislation about abortion in different countries during 1998 to 2007. It is obvious that liberalization of abortion laws is the main trend during the last 10 years around the world. More countries have broadened the grounds of legal abortion. Since 1998, sixteen countries have increased the number of grounds on which abortions may be legally performed. Even the countries have prohibited abortion by its laws allow a part of abortion when pregnancy would hurt the mother's health. Only two countries added restriction to the laws of abortion.
The research paper supports my points of view. Banning abortion under all the conditions is impossible. If the government liberalizes the laws and makes the aborted procedures more accessible, it can reduce women's maternal mortality or morbidity. It also increases woman's human rights, because woman can be the master of her own bodies. They would not be forced to accept the child even when the child come from rape, incest, and so forth. Women are in the first place of this issue of abortion. Restrict abortion not only harm women’s human rights, but also make the secret and dangerous abortion increase. By the normal access to abortion can help women stay in a safer condition. They do not have to worry about the danger of accepting a secret procedure. If a woman considers to aborting her child, the government should provide her enough information and the result of abortion instead of limiting women’s rights. As the woman understand what abortion is, how the procedure be performed, and think about why she choose to abort her baby, she would make the most appropriate decision herself.
It can be questioned that are those who opposed to abortion really caring about women’s circumstances? Have they ever stood in women’s position? In an article “The Female Nature: A Woman's Destiny?” on the Journal of Humanist takes partial-birth abortion for example. The Congress of United States prohibits partial-birth because they think that the procedure is inhumane. There is a Justice wrote about why abortion should be banned. They suppose that woman would--and should--regret for having an abortion. Abortion violates woman’s motherhood. Therefore, the government should prohibit abortion. The other article “Abortion: we need compassion, not dogma” on the Journal of New Statesman mentions about the “pro-life” campaigners. From the two articles, we can see that woman’s thoughts are usually to be neglected. The government, humanist, and the clergy intend to limit woman’s right to have abortion. Regardless of each woman’s unique situation, what women need is usually ignored. Why can they force woman to accept their arbitrary decision? When it comes to a woman’s set of circumstances, we should respect the necessity of woman to make such choice in the first place. There is no denying that woman is the person who involved. However, most of the legislative commissioners who decided the policy are males. Did they really know what woman confront? Or they just limit woman’s rights by the slogan of humanism?
Morality and humanism is the main standpoints for those who oppose to abortion. The anti-abortion groups care about the unborn baby more than the mother who is pregnant. Nevertheless, the role mother plays is actually the most important one. The mother has to face all the problems when she decides to give birth to her baby. What women need is compassion, instead of the dogma and condemnation. Anti-abortion groups condemn women’s behavior of aborting the babies, but such condemnation is meaningless if they can not provide any way to solve women’s complicated problems under each particular condition.
Instead of feeling regretful to have a baby, it is much better to have a correct idea about sex, especially for those juveniles. Our society should provide more information about sex. People should make use of condoms and contraceptive drugs to prevent pregnancy if they do not want to have children.

2008/12/30
下午 11:43:50
[ 耐心 patient] :)
YEAH
2008/12/30
下午 11:43:57
蘇菲亞
I learned the style this semester
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:03
[ 耐心 patient] :)
that's what teacher focus on
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:07
[ 耐心 patient] :)
why
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:07
[ 耐心 patient] :)
= =
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:12
蘇菲亞
before, I would just post the website
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:22
涵兒
Ok~
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:27
蘇菲亞
or simply paste the name of the author
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:43
蘇菲亞
and would not do it in the rigt form
2008/12/30
下午 11:45:32

It is also important to search the online databases with concise keyword.
2008/12/30
下午 11:45:58
涵兒
It's important to have work cited.
2008/12/30
下午 11:47:02
友君
I usually ignored the citation in the past, too.
2008/12/30
下午 11:48:08

It's easy to forget ="=
2008/12/30
下午 11:49:18
[ 耐心 patient] :)

2008/12/30
下午 11:49:38

下午 11:49:49
[ 耐心 patient] :)
the digital resourses
2008/12/30
下午 11:50:59
蘇菲亞
yeah
2008/12/30
下午 11:51:40
蘇菲亞
So shall we start to organize our conversation
2008/12/30
下午 11:53:09
涵兒
YA
2008/12/30
下午 11:53:20
[ 耐心 patient] :)
ok
2008/12/30
下午 11:53:30
蘇菲亞
First of all, we have to discover our writing. We have to change our style of writing and the form of composing our works so as to meet different readers request.
2008/12/30
下午 11:54:19
蘇菲亞
Organize our writings with clear thesis statement, and remenber do not be vague in the writing.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:09
涵兒
We can make our paper better by revising.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:19
蘇菲亞
Pay attention to our writings by using precise words and punctuation.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:28
友君
Avoid grammar and puntuation problems.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:38
蘇菲亞
Do not confuse the readers.
2008/12/30
下午 11:56:15
蘇菲亞
Class discussion is also important. We can talk with our friends about our topics.
2008/12/30
下午 11:56:45
蘇菲亞
Everyone of us may point out the strong and weak point of our works.
2008/12/30
下午 11:57:05

Organize each paragraph logically. Make the argument and your interpretation clearly.
2008/12/30
下午 11:57:21
[ 耐心 patient] :)
yeap
2008/12/30
下午 11:57:56
[ 耐心 patient] :)
so let's divide our discussion into many parts
2008/12/30
下午 11:58:47
[ 耐心 patient] :)
first, the general ideas about this book?? whcih parts affect you the most
2008/12/31
上午 12:01:05
友君
Some general ideas have mentioned before.
2008/12/31
上午 12:01:10
涵兒
I think the book gives me a useful skills about writing; And I think all of the parts are essential for me to develop the issue. Different parts focus on different skills.
2008/12/31
上午 12:02:21
蘇菲亞
Later on could we compose our 500 words of book review by using some of the sentences in our conversation?
2008/12/31
上午 12:02:52
蘇菲亞
Or shall we write the entire one with different styles and ways?
2008/12/31
上午 12:03:02
[ 耐心 patient] :)
so do we need to distribute these jobs
2008/12/31
上午 12:04:02
涵兒
Maybe it works.
2008/12/31
上午 12:04:33
[ 耐心 patient] :)
or we need to find someone to puzzle our discussion up
2008/12/31
上午 12:06:05
友君
I do not know what the teacher wants...
2008/12/31
上午 12:06:30

上午 12:07:11
[ 耐心 patient] :)
XDD
2008/12/31
上午 12:07:48
蘇菲亞
She wants us to introduce the book
2008/12/31
上午 12:08:08
蘇菲亞
and point out what's our favorite part of the book.
2008/12/31
上午 12:08:18
蘇菲亞
so how shall we divide our work?
2008/12/31
上午 12:09:08
[ 耐心 patient] :)
OK
2008/12/31
上午 12:09:44
[ 耐心 patient] :)
first, who is responsible to make a concise introduction of this book?
2008/12/31
上午 12:09:54
[ 耐心 patient] :)
and then
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:15
[ 耐心 patient] :)
some people do the middle parts
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:25
[ 耐心 patient] :)
what are our favorite parts
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:35
[ 耐心 patient] :)
this can use our diologues
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:59
[ 耐心 patient] :)
what do you think about
2008/12/31
上午 12:12:24
蘇菲亞
Or we could compose it with the dialogue over here?
2008/12/31
上午 12:12:49
[ 耐心 patient] :)
can we?
2008/12/31
上午 12:13:04
蘇菲亞
I don't think it is a good idea to separate one article into four parts
2008/12/31
上午 12:13:19
涵兒
Yes~
2008/12/31
上午 12:13:22

I think we can take advantage of the dialogues.
2008/12/31
上午 12:14:18
友君
and write the chapter we liked
2008/12/31
上午 12:15:21

2008/12/31
上午 12:16:07
[ 耐心 patient] :)
YEAH
2008/12/31
上午 12:16:50
涵兒
OK//
2008/12/31
上午 12:18:46

Do you mean that we have to introduce some main points in each chapter? Each one provide introduction of some chapters?
2008/12/31
上午 12:19:41
涵兒
I agree.
2008/12/31
上午 12:20:12
友君
So~
2008/12/31

2008/12/31
上午 12:26:31

下午 10:11:39
友君
Ok.
2008/12/30
下午 10:11:49
[ 耐心 patient] :)
two hours discussing
2008/12/30
下午 10:11:59

ok~
2008/12/30
下午 10:13:21

so first of all
2008/12/30
下午 10:13:31

It's good~
2008/12/30
下午 10:14:52

When we are talking about movies, I think I would come up with Jerome Class~
2008/12/30
下午 10:16:51
[ 耐心 patient] :)
or stewart
2008/12/30
下午 10:17:08

It's impressive to see the same clips in different classes!
2008/12/30
下午 10:18:40

And analyze the photography. Just like what we do on Jerome's class.
2008/12/30
下午 10:19:28
[ 耐心 patient] :)
but can't put more emphasis on movie
2008/12/30
下午 10:20:28
友君
Yes. I think we can talk about some writing skill in the text book.
2008/12/30
下午 10:21:29
涵兒
Our group is talking about "Writing about Literature".
2008/12/30
下午 10:22:25
友君
There are some things have to do when we are going to write or analyze the literature work.
2008/12/30
下午 10:22:41
涵兒
I think it also applies to our reading in English or American literature.
2008/12/30
下午 10:23:22
友君
We need to know what the author wants to express first.
2008/12/30
下午 10:23:38
友君
and provide our own interpretation.
2008/12/30
下午 10:24:54
蘇菲亞
Yes, and that's really important, too
2008/12/30
下午 10:24:54
[ 耐心 patient] :)
i think we can list some important writing skills
2008/12/30
下午 10:25:02
[ 耐心 patient] :)
yeah
2008/12/30
下午 10:25:04

2008/12/30
下午 10:26:10

Recongnize your purpose.
2008/12/30
下午 10:27:34
友君
The first main point in chapter 11 and chapter 12. (Description and Narration)
2008/12/30
下午 10:28:35

2008/12/30
下午 10:29:26

argumentation
2008/12/30
下午 10:29:26
[ 耐心 patient] :)
decription
2008/12/30
下午 10:29:46
蘇菲亞
By the way, we have to know who are the readers
2008/12/30
下午 10:30:27
涵兒
To interest the readers~
2008/12/30
下午 10:30:37
涵兒
with your own topic!
2008/12/30
下午 10:30:50

You need to make your readers be convinced.
2008/12/30
下午 10:32:02
友君
Some experiences can support your perspective.
2008/12/30
下午 10:33:38
蘇菲亞
You are right
2008/12/30
下午 10:34:08
[ 耐心 patient] :)
so we have to divide our paper in many parts
2008/12/30
下午 10:34:18
蘇菲亞
So we have to choose our subject carefully
2008/12/30
下午 10:36:22
友君
Also, choose to describe things in objective or subjective way.
2008/12/30
下午 10:37:15

And with some logic in writting skills.
2008/12/30
下午 10:48:54

蘇菲亞
1. What is the most interesting part and persuasive point in your essay.
2008/12/30
下午 10:50:54

2008/12/30
下午 10:55:03
友君
How to organize your essay effectively is significant.
2008/12/30
下午 10:55:03

2008/12/30
下午 10:55:55
友君
Sometimes the readers might have trouble to understand.
2008/12/30

2008/12/30
下午 11:00:12
友君

2008/12/30
下午 11:00:48

下午 11:00:58
蘇菲亞
tha's true
2008/12/30
下午 11:02:45

Explore the possibilities and your opinions.
2008/12/30
下午 11:04:11
友君
Anticipate opposing views.
2008/12/30
下午 11:04:56
涵兒
The classmates' comments are also very helpful~
2008/12/30
下午 11:05:41
蘇菲亞
In chapter 10 for example, when writing an argumentation esay, we have to use "appropriate tone"
2008/12/30

下午 11:06:07
[ 耐心 patient] :)
yeah
2008/12/30
下午 11:06:17
蘇菲亞
different people can find out one another's weak point
2008/12/30
下午 11:06:27
蘇菲亞
they could offer us some precious opinion
2008/12/30
下午 11:07:18
涵兒
Yup~
2008/12/30
下午 11:07:35
友君
And we also have to fight with each other to strengthen our viewpoint.
2008/12/30
下午 11:09:27
蘇菲亞
that;s right
2008/12/30
下午 11:09:47

2008/12/30
下午 11:11:23
蘇菲亞
I would so much like to hit my room mates
2008/12/30
下午 11:11:44
涵兒
Ha~~
2008/12/30
下午 11:11:54
蘇菲亞

2008/12/30
下午 11:13:14
[ 耐心 patient] :)
and other people will also give you advice
2008/12/30

2008/12/30
下午 11:21:03
蘇菲亞

2008/12/30
下午 11:21:13
涵兒
It does help~
2008/12/30
下午 11:22:01
友君
Yes. It is the basic problems we should pay attention to.
2008/12/30
下午 11:22:47
涵兒
But after getting lots of information in writing skills, I think when I start to write something, I still lose some points.
2008/12/30
下午 11:24:02
友君
It is hard to achieve all the points, so we have to learn and revise.
2008/12/30
下午 11:24:47
涵兒
Revising is important:)
2008/12/30
下午 11:27:01
[ 耐心 patient] :)
so we need to overcome these obstacles
2008/12/30
下午 11:27:30
友君
The order of time and space the transitional words are needed to be consider. (Chapter 3)
2008/12/30

下午 11:39:29
[ 耐心 patient] :)
you guys really point out many ideas
2008/12/30
下午 11:39:50

下午 11:44:03
[ 耐心 patient] :)
that's what teacher focus on
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:07
[ 耐心 patient] :)
why
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:07
[ 耐心 patient] :)
= =
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:12
蘇菲亞
before, I would just post the website
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:22
涵兒
Ok~
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:27
蘇菲亞
or simply paste the name of the author
2008/12/30
下午 11:44:43
蘇菲亞
and would not do it in the rigt form
2008/12/30
下午 11:45:32
友君
It is also important to search the online databases with concise keyword.
2008/12/30
下午 11:45:58
涵兒
It's important to have work cited.
2008/12/30
下午 11:47:02
友君
I usually ignored the citation in the past, too.
2008/12/30
下午 11:48:08
涵兒
It's easy to forget ="=
2008/12/30
下午 11:49:18
[ 耐心 patient] :)

2008/12/30
下午 11:49:38

下午 11:49:49
[ 耐心 patient] :)
the digital resourses
2008/12/30
下午 11:50:59
蘇菲亞
yeah
2008/12/30
下午 11:51:40
蘇菲亞
So shall we start to organize our conversation
2008/12/30
下午 11:53:09
涵兒
YA
2008/12/30
下午 11:53:20
[ 耐心 patient] :)
ok
2008/12/30
下午 11:53:30
蘇菲亞
First of all, we have to discover our writing. We have to change our style of writing and the form of composing our works so as to meet different readers request.
2008/12/30
下午 11:54:19
蘇菲亞
Organize our writings with clear thesis statement, and remenber do not be vague in the writing.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:09
涵兒
We can make our paper better by revising.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:19
蘇菲亞
Pay attention to our writings by using precise words and punctuation.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:28
友君
Avoid grammar and puntuation problems.
2008/12/30
下午 11:55:38
蘇菲亞
Do not confuse the readers.
2008/12/30
下午 11:56:15
蘇菲亞
Class discussion is also important. We can talk with our friends about our topics.
2008/12/30
下午 11:56:45
蘇菲亞
Everyone of us may point out the strong and weak point of our works.
2008/12/30
下午 11:57:05
友君
Organize each paragraph logically. Make the argument and your interpretation clearly.
2008/12/30
下午 11:57:21
[ 耐心 patient] :)
yeap
2008/12/30
下午 11:57:56
[ 耐心 patient] :)
so let's divide our discussion into many parts
2008/12/30
下午 11:58:47
[ 耐心 patient] :)
first, the general ideas about this book?? whcih parts affect you the most
2008/12/31
上午 12:01:05
友君
Some general ideas have mentioned before.
2008/12/31
上午 12:01:10
涵兒
I think the book gives me a useful skills about writing; And I think all of the parts are essential for me to develop the issue. Different parts focus on different skills.
2008/12/31
上午 12:02:21
蘇菲亞
Later on could we compose our 500 words of book review by using some of the sentences in our conversation?
2008/12/31
上午 12:02:52
蘇菲亞
Or shall we write the entire one with different styles and ways?
2008/12/31
上午 12:03:02
[ 耐心 patient] :)
so do we need to distribute these jobs
2008/12/31
上午 12:04:02
涵兒
Maybe it works.
2008/12/31
上午 12:04:33
[ 耐心 patient] :)
or we need to find someone to puzzle our discussion up
2008/12/31
上午 12:06:05
友君
I do not know what the teacher wants...
2008/12/31
上午 12:06:30
[ 耐心 patient] :)
haha
2008/12/31
上午 12:07:01
涵兒
Me, either.....
2008/12/31
上午 12:07:11
[ 耐心 patient] :)
XDD
2008/12/31
上午 12:07:48
蘇菲亞
She wants us to introduce the book
2008/12/31
上午 12:08:08
蘇菲亞
and point out what's our favorite part of the book.
2008/12/31
上午 12:08:18
蘇菲亞
so how shall we divide our work?
2008/12/31
上午 12:09:08
[ 耐心 patient] :)
OK
2008/12/31
上午 12:09:44
[ 耐心 patient] :)
first, who is responsible to make a concise introduction of this book?
2008/12/31
上午 12:09:54
[ 耐心 patient] :)
and then
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:15
[ 耐心 patient] :)
some people do the middle parts
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:25
[ 耐心 patient] :)
what are our favorite parts
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:35
[ 耐心 patient] :)
this can use our diologues
2008/12/31
上午 12:10:59
[ 耐心 patient] :)
what do you think about
2008/12/31
上午 12:12:24
蘇菲亞
Or we could compose it with the dialogue over here?
2008/12/31
上午 12:12:49
[ 耐心 patient] :)
can we?
2008/12/31
上午 12:13:04
蘇菲亞
I don't think it is a good idea to separate one article into four parts
2008/12/31
上午 12:13:19
涵兒
Yes~
2008/12/31
上午 12:13:22
友君
I think we can take advantage of the dialogues.
2008/12/31
上午 12:14:18
友君
and write the chapter we liked
2008/12/31
上午 12:15:21
[ 耐心 patient] :)
yeah
2008/12/31
上午 12:15:31
涵兒
OK
2008/12/31
上午 12:15:31
[ 耐心 patient] :)
this mentioned beforeXD
2008/12/31
上午 12:15:42
友君
We can write the introduction, our favorite and impressed chapters, and then what we have used in our paper.
2008/12/31
上午 12:16:07
[ 耐心 patient] :)
YEAH
2008/12/31
上午 12:16:50
涵兒
OK//
2008/12/31
上午 12:18:46
友君
Do you mean that we have to introduce some main points in each chapter? Each one provide introduction of some chapters?
2008/12/31
上午 12:19:41
涵兒
I agree.
2008/12/31
上午 12:20:12
友君
So~
2008/12/31
上午 12:20:27
蘇菲亞
So~
2008/12/31
上午 12:20:27
[ 耐心 patient] :)
the generanl introduction of this book
2008/12/31
上午 12:20:37
[ 耐心 patient] :)
genearl introduction
2008/12/31
上午 12:20:48
蘇菲亞
I can organize that in the papers
2008/12/31
上午 12:21:08
[ 耐心 patient] :)
just like you need to introduce this book to other people
2008/12/31
上午 12:21:08
蘇菲亞
by means of the dialogue
2008/12/31
上午 12:21:18
蘇菲亞
and I would send them to one of you
2008/12/31
上午 12:21:18
涵兒
That's all?
2008/12/31
上午 12:21:28
蘇菲亞
and then send it to the third people
2008/12/31
上午 12:21:34

Book Review [Group Essay]
This semester we have learned lots of writing skills and the steps of how to write an essay from the book “Steps to Writing Well” written by Jean Wyrick. This book guides us to write a variety of essays by following the steps from the basic elements to the advanced skills which provides us an elementary direction to the world of writing. In the following, we would make a brief introduction of this book.
When composing works, we need to pay attention to several problems. Firstly, discover our audience is important. We have to change our style of writing and the form of composing our works so as to meet different readers request. Remember to organize our writings with clear thesis statements; we should not bore them with confusion, and disorder. Thus, to interest the readers with a sexy topic is really important. Also, choose to describe things in objective or subjective way. Different writing categories such as argumentations and descriptions have different writing methods. Secondly, try to convince the readers with abundant evidences to support our ideas. Besides, we can make our essays vivid by using sensory details. Thirdly, after finishing writing the articles, we have to revise them. Think of the questions such as whether the topics are too broad or too narrow, does specific ideas support our viewpoint and so on. Grammar, punctuation, word choice and usage are also what we should pay attention to. In addition, we could also ask someone else to look over our works, because with their help, we could find out more faults that we have not realized. Last but not the least, we have to write down the citation in a proper format.
All of these writing skills are contained in the book and really offers us a clear and complete guideline to writing well. Besides the brief introduction of this book, the following are some of the favorite chapters we think of as the most important and impress us the most.
To begin with, we discussed about which chapter is our favorite one. Most of us thought that Chapter 18 “Writing about Film” is the most impressive and interesting chapter. Sophia’s group introduced about how to analyze a film, and the clips they chose made their report become more abundant. We also connected this chapter with Jerome’s film class and Stewart’s movie discussion class. Then, we turned to regard some important writing skills when we are going to organize an essay. Recognizing your purpose and choosing the topic carefully should be consider in the first place. Knowing who the readers are, trying to interest and convince them with your unique viewpoints and feelings are significant. In addition, providing specific examples to support your ideas, building the arguments and giving out your position are necessary, too. In chapter 10, using appropriate tone and seeing the opposite points of view could help us to fight against those people who have opposite opinions.
Afterwards, the problems we should avoid became our discussing topic. In chapter 20 and 21, the usage of grammar and punctuation are pointed out. The order of time and space and the transitional words between each paragraph are also needed to be considered. Besides, we learned how to put the source and the author’s name in a correct form in chapter 14. The citation made the reference we used clearly. When we are going to write an article, remember to use the concise words and keep asking “why”. It can help us to express our meanings more concrete. At last, by the process of revising, our defects of writing can be improved. It is the only way to make our articles become better and smoothly.
